#1 Going up with the family to Seattle next month and one of the suggestions is that we drive up to explore/hike Ranier. Is it worth the 3 hour drive each way for a day trip?

Yes, it's worth it.

#2 What is the hiking like and what other things can we do on or around the mountain with kids?

Lots of trails up there. Do some research beforehand on which ones are the best for how long you want to hike (wta.org would be a good place to start). The visitor center up there might have some interesting stuff for them too.

And the really dumb question.... Is it even possible to drive up high enough to where an easy hike could be made to where there might be some snow/ice on the ground for the kids to see?

If you're coming up here next month, all of the snow will be gone for where you can drive to. There are glaciers to hike on on the way up to Camp Muir though. That trail will get you up into the snow. Could be quite a hike though.
