I bet you fit in nicely when you tell everyone how tacky they are.

I begged, pleaded, cajoled, plied, and bribed my sailors with all I had to get them to quit smoking. Two did for about four months. It didn't take. I never shied away from complaining about smokers in a general sense, but I would never personally insult a subordinate like that.

I would like to see the Navy go smoke-free on ships, but I suppose mutiny is a real possibility.

ETA: And in case you didn't pick it up, there is a bit of levity in all of this. I know smokers whom I respect and admire, just as they may or may not know a heavy-drinking alleged overseas whoremonger.

See how well the dipping ban is working. There is no way you'll separate it from military life, for young people, 10 months on a floating prison can be tough, tobacco is an enormous coping mechanism

Why? They have designated pits and despite the waste of time I would argue that tobacco improves efficiency on ships

14 hour days. 7 day work weeks. No privacy. Limited access to email/internet. Spades only gets you so far.

If you really want to entice them and you swing it, I would suggest relaxing hair and facial hair regs for non smoking sailors. Go on the honor code system and make an occasional trip to the smoke pit

BTW I haven't smoked in a month, and the boat is where I first came to rely on it. I've never gone more than a day. I feel like I'm in the clear. Somehow I've lost weight. All thanks to bubbilicious
