I stayed at the Courtyard Copley Square - LINK - Pretty centrally located. Less than 2 blocks from the subway (I think its call the T).
Easy to walk to a lot of places around there for sure, but the T is really useful, and I think we got an unlimited 7 day pass for like $20 or less. We only took 1 cab the whole time we were there and used the T the rest of the time, even to get back to the airport.
Check the Food & Drink Board for restaurant recs - LINK
ETA: in case you didn't know, Courtyard is a Marriott brand so his points would work at the hotel I suggested. Just FYI.
