main reason is people invest too much in a boat, which for 99% of the people out there is something that will rarely be used.
T-Bob gets a few extra dollars in his pocket and decides he wants a boat. He goes buy him a $20k boat and uses it a few times then parks it for a year or two. Now he has to pay to get it running again or let it rot in his yard.
This. Never understood people a) paying as much for a boat as they do their vehicle and b) not using said boat after spending so much money on it. Seriously, if you're going to go spend $25 on a boat, it probably needs to be something you're going to use quite a bit.
I think a lot of people honestly just go out with a friend once or twice, get caught up in lake fever and then decide to plunk down the money, not realizing what ownership entails. It's easy to stomach a payment on your car when you use it every day, not so much when it's for something you use sparingly for 5 months out of the year and then store for 7 months. Then, two years later, these same people are baffled when their $25k boat has depreciated -- like any depreciating asset does -- and they can't recoup their money.
