Yep, and this isn't frivolous. It's still their store and responsibility and liability. First off, a young girl working by herself at a cell phone store is a big problem for me. Secondly, the life you mentioned and shite happening happens much more often in the dirty than anywhere else save large metro areas. The best long term answer is distance, lots of it.

If she were to file a lawsuit against her employer, it would be. The employer wouldn't be held liable unless they had knowledge of a threat or a relationship with the assailant.

I know that better than most, considering I've been shot 4 times, in the "dirty." What's that have to do with anything?
