Just a completely f'ed up situation all around.
The only way these countries will ever pull themselves out of the mess they're in would be to sustain enough economic development to the point where the vast majority of people cease to see the point in all this religious violence. They would rather live their lives in peace and prosperity, and they would be more than happy to nip in the bud these extremist groups who threaten that peace.
The problem is that there is so much corruption and mismanagement embedded in the political culture that sustained economic development is unlikely, even if there weren't all this violence.
