He did it right in front of his wife after an argument. He shot himself in the face. He was 78, retired, wealthy. They were both alcoholics. So sad. I'm crushed for my friend.
This is NOT making light of this but everyone has their struggles. He was retired, wealthy and, for some reason, he was miserable. When I was in the deepest parts of my depression and extremely suicidal I read a story about a military man who accompanied soldier's body's back to their families, Taking Chance style, and his PTSD from that drove him to suicide. At his funeral his friend said something that stuck with me and really kicked me in the proverbial head about him. He said "my friend did not want to die, he just didn't want to be alive anymore" which sounds redundant but is so poignant and, now, what I realize I was feeling.
Thoughts and prayers to your friend and his family and friends and this horrible time of loss.

This very well could have been the case. Thanks for the insight.
