I'm just starting. Only got gloves (white, though it doesn't matter much) because I've been practicing so much and was getting blisters from not holding the club correctly.
So, don't worry about how you look. I've got $60 clubs, $10 gloves, and $30 shoes, and I'm improving my game before I spend too much money.
Keep it cheap and simple until you're confident in your play and playing more regularly. Anyone on the course will tell you that because they've all told me that.
Also, people are SUPER helpful if you ask for advice on the driving range while you're practicing. Don't be shy, and dudes don't care much about what brand you're wearing as long as you're wearing shorts, a polo, and a normal cap

how can you have just started and be giving advice. that's dumb. and $60? i spend that on beer for a round
