I've lived in both and while it is closer than some might think it's Birmingham.
ETA: Birmingham just has so many different areas to live with different things to do. Definitely a city on the upswing

Grew up in Memphis as a kid and have only driven through B-ham a few times but I'll give the nod to B-ham since no place is worse than Memphis.

I grew up 20 minutes outside of Memphis and also spend nearly every Thanksgiving in B-ham, and I'd take Magic City.
