How much time were you in Amsterdam? I had 6 hours and immigration was literally 30 seconds. The USA needs to stop being such security pussies.

As for Frankfurt, OP, let me know if there is a great place in the airport. My layover there in December is only a couple hours so no leaving.

If you exit the airport security and go downstairs toward the train stations there is an entire shopping mall with several food places. Coming back through security isn't bad but their metal detectors here are much more sensitive than in the US.
