The natives who work in tourism related jobs (restaurants, hotels, shops and such around the coastal areas are usually pleasant on Kauai). Just don't expect happy faces and warm greetings when you drive out of the main areas. My wife and I have taken 5 two week trips to Kauai over 12 years and I learned rather quick to not drive through areas where natives live, go to school, etc.. Same here. Natives don't live on reservations and turned down tribal status in the 70's. Now they want it, and most don't like whites, even though natives still have their ancestral lands. Many villages want self governance. Two troopers were killed in a village a month ago. Many native villages are a nightmare for white (or black) folks.
