When I was little, my caterpillars-in-a-jar always made cocoons but never came out.

I had caterpillars when I was little too. My grandma has milkweed plants that attract monarch butterflies, so we'd take the caterpillars off there and have a few branches and leaves in the little plastic box. We successfully cultivated a few butterflies though.
