Meh - if Humphrey took every state Wallace did, he still loses the EC 301 to 237. Even as it was, Humphrey carried the biggest Southern state - Texas.
Where would his other 33 electors have come? Florida? I agree the popular vote was pretty tight - I think the people voting for Nixon - in many places, were voting against LBJ - by proxy. The Wallace votes would have split pretty evenly, in my opinion - his biggest impact was actually winning electors - electors that wouldn't have helped Humphrey in the first place.
