man, I just can't agree with that at all. clapton is a great guitarist, but doesn't hold a candle to hendrix
I can understand your opinion. I love jimi, but the more I heard of Claptons catalog, the more I felt this way. And im sure it has something to do with me being able to see Clapton live, were as jimi is just graining video and audio.

Hendrix > Clapton for innovation.
Clapton > Hendrix for skill.

I know these lists are subjective, but John Mayer as a top 10 guitarist of all time is laughable.

Chet Atkins and Roy Clark are better than most of those listed so far, and they both blow away anyone in WSP or Phish.

BB King is my all time favorite. I don't care what anyone else says.

I certainly don't. I actually play guitar. I guess I should leave this discussion to people who suck down whippets and play air guitar to repetitive noodling...

Snobby fans sometimes.

I listened to those 2 links.
quote:I don't get it either. They don't jump out to me as anything special.
If that's the greatest hits highlight real of phish then that's just bad. Nothing special or elite or great about those. They were OK at best. For the most part it was a few guys playing their instruments at the same time although rarely together or in sync. Sometimes they obviously were out of key and sync and it just sounded bad. They aren't even an impressive jam band. It's not like a bunch of elite musicians having a good time that was like listening to a bunch of mediocre dudes with little practice jam in a garage while their fricked up friend played with the light switches.

Its cool brah, some people dont have the musical depth to get it.

Well this is the Phish Board so...

The man puts on a hell of a show as well. Saw him at Bonnaroo and he made a 70,000 person crowd in a field feel like a 10 person backroom in a Mississippi bar. He's phenomenal at his craft.

Solid argument. I guess I got roasted.

Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Pete Townshend remain the most important guitarists in Rock music. All developments since can largely be sourced to their individual or collective fountainhead. Others have some claim to membership of this group but in the light of serious analysis they don't quite reach that peak of originality. Ironically the least technically accomplished of the four, Pete, has the greatest obvious influence today - the chording lead rather then single note and with the whole spectrum of songwriting and rhythm guitarists, acoustic and electric. And of course his amp volume/pyrotechnics and guitar whacking which were components integrated into the other three especially Hendrix.
Townshends' influence is the greatest or most inclusive. However, by comparison, the influence of Clapton and Hendrix have, by far, cultivated and literally defined the very foundation, form and role of modern blues rock guitar playing/soloing.

Just some food for thought. Some very interesting notes in this link.

No Jimmy Page?

I found this little gem in the story :
quote:
Beck was also developing a distinctive approach due to 'competitive forces' rather than borrowing - that was left to Jimmy Page.

Page is a truly great guitar player who has been a huge influence on the music scene. If you don't agree with that I don't agree with your opinions on music
