Pasteurized milk has been heated up so that it kills the bacteria - good and bad bacteria.
Here's the deal. Raw milk can be dangerous and you can get Listeria and other sicknesses drinking it. I think that is why it was banned. We have been drinking it since 2007 and have never been sick - Never. But, this is why you want to purchase raw milk from a local farmer that has a few cows that he takes care of. You can see the condition that the cows are in and the cleanliness of his farm. It is a good idea to buy locally and get to know the source of your food anyway.
Local farmers who sell directly to friends and neighbors are not going to give you bad stuff. If a farmer has 1,000 cows and commingles all his milk into eight thousand gallon tanks and sells it to an anonymous consumer... well... that's why the y pasteurize it to kill all the bad stuff that's in it.
Another cool thing about raw milk is it is not homogenized. The cream rises to the top and you can skim it off and make butter or fresh whipped cream. Or you can just shake it up and drink whole milk - Delicious! Homogenized milk puts everything in suspension.
