Drop your DirecTV, switch to your local Cable company.
Buy desktop with Win7 that has media center
Buy 4TB HDD for $ 150
Buy HDHomerun Prime from Amazon for $120
Rent cablecard from cable company for $1-2/month.
Do not rent cable box or DVR.
You now save ~$20/month. You've spent around $600. After 2.5 years from now, you save money. If something breaks before then, you don't. It's like a gamble for your entire life, but your life is only worth about $600 in this scenario.
