I once dated a girl from L.A. who moved to Louisiana. She told me that, not long after she got here, the first time a perfect stranger just casually said "hello" to her in public, it confused the hell out of her because she wasn't sure if it was someone she knew. She was a little shocked, but soon realized that's just how we are. I've visited San Diego and can say that's absolutely true. People in public really don't even look each other in the eye, and are generally very cold and in their own world.

The south has the friendliest people you'll ever meet, but we're a shade stupider (on average) than the folks out west, so I guess it's a trade-off. The point earlier about the fast food workers is 100% correct, so I guess it's all about what's most important to you.
