It may have taken only six months to learn but I remember receiving a worthless "handwriting" grade all the way through eighth grade.

Not even close to comparable. We aren't talking about a machine that does cursive for us. We are talking about an expression of writing, not writing itself. It's more akin to saying that students should learn how to work math problem on touchscreen tablets instead of looseleaf.
