I think it is a lot less popular than it was, it's certainly not gaining popularity right now.
The Mcgwire/Sosa home run chase was the last time I can recall baseball being truly exciting. With all of the PEDs, it has taken a lot away from the game. Baseball is also just not enjoyable to watch on tv in my opinion. I can go to an actual game and enjoy it, but watching on tv is awful. I also think there are way too many games.

Baseball is definitely gaining in popularity now. Revenues are way up. National ratings are down, but local ratings are going up. Individual teams are signing multi-billion dollar television deals.
It's almost universally rated as the second most popular sport in polls, behind the NFL and ahead of college football.
