Well from what I understand the NCAA is more at fault than the NFL for mental illness. Some college did a study on this...I believe it was Purdue?...that showed conclusive evidence that any player sustaining more than 700 blows to the head in a college season would likely sustain permanent brain damage. IMO until the NCAA starts limiting contact practices, unfortunately this trend will continue. This even trickles down to the HS level.

The NFL has at least taken measures in the interest of the safety of the players...I believe they are only allowed 1 contact practice per week?? Sure, there are rules now at all levels about helmet-to-helmet contact and leaving your feet during a hit, but many players with mental problems as they get older are linemen that sustain blows to the head on every play. Kids are bigger, stronger and faster than they ever were. Sure, we are more aware and cautious regarding concussions, and equipment technology is much more advanced than in years past, but I don't see an easy solution to the problem.
