Penalties aren't that common that shrinking the size of the box would benefit keepers.

In last season's Premier League, there were 86 penalties in 380 matches 23%
In Bundesliga, there were 83 in 306 matches 27%
In La Liga, there were 109 in 380 matches 29%
In Serie A, there were 132 in 380 matches 35%
World Cup 2010 there were 15 in 64 matches 23%

1 out of 3 to 1 out of 5 decided by PKs

take into account how many matches are 0-0
then how many matches are 1 goal differentials ie 1-2, but the second goal was a PK awarded in the 5th min of the game off a dive at the edge of the box.

I'd like to see your math on this. (Please show your work.)

Yea i think these were just how many games had a pentalty kick.. especially since games can end in ties. Unless you broke it down and said oh this was a game in which it was 4-0 final and had a pk so that game wasn't decided by pk's

I don't agree with moving the box size down for the reasoning of goalies ability to come out and stop an over the top ball or lobbed through ball. As a defender, I think this would change alot of how the game is played.
However, i do think a reduction in the size of the box in which a pk would be given would be beneficial or as someone put it more common sense used. I agree with the idea that it should be a goal scoring opportunity

I don't really think that this was the complete question of the OP. I think it was more of the Pk's used as an overtime way to decide a winner. To that, I think it is great personally. Granted i like the idea of the FA Cup replay but that is unfeasable in tournaments like the Confed. Cup and World Cup etc.
Adding more time is also unfeasable IMO because the players are already dead after 120. I think it is the best possible scenario and most exciting for the fans. Plus going into 7th or 8th pk (like in the Italy-Spain game) is rare, so its not as easy as the OP suggests. and i like Buffon's chances against anyone who posts on this board.

1 out of 3 to 1 out of 5 decided by PKs*

*ASSumtion made that every PK is the deciding goal in the game.

Here's a quick and dirty way to look at the numbers...
Out of 380 PL matches last year:
1063 goals scored
149 games were decided by one goal (59 were 1-0)

That means 8.1% of the goals were PKs.
If you assume that any goal has the potential of being the game winner. Then only 12 games were decided by a PK (8.1% of 149 is 12).
What's 12 games in 380? That would be 3%.

Now the question is, "Is 8% of goals being PKs acceptable?" That is just from the last year of the PL. Other leagues and years could be very different.

Bonus stat: 108 games ended in a tie (35 of which was 0-0) I had the number figured I'd share it too
