We joke, but that was the reality of casting back then - much of it built upon habitual relationships and networking. Star Trek had solid casting, but, 2 of the 3 primary female roles in Trek were filled by 2 of Roddenberry's girlfriends, one of whom ended up Mrs. Roddenberry.

There are also rumors about Roddenberry's lechery during that era - we saw a lot of relatively unknown, attractive female guest stars go through the original series, and he may have influenced some of the casting sessions, if you catch my meaning.

While not directly relevant to this discussion, Clint Howard came from an acting family. His brother is a legendary film director, after being a legendary young television actor - and he, in turn, cast his brother and parents in many of his movies.

Oh, and another production note - the Tranya was actually grapefruit juice, which Clint did not like. He had to work through it and act like he enjoyed it.
