Good episode. Interesting to see how the series developed from this pilot.
I would have loved to see this as a mid-season episode, though. I wonder how McCoy would have advised Kirk in dealing with his crazed friend.
An interesting factoid - the Transporter Room set was not completed for the pilot, so Scotty stood at the helm/navigation console to beam the flight recorder aboard. It doesn't have the familiar slide controls.

He would have probably carried the humanity part of the episode - Kirk unded up doing that - and maybe it was appropriate as it was his friend.
Another interesting vibe is that Mitchell, although the navigator (ETA: I stand corrected - helmsan, Kelso was the navigator in this episode, but they were sitting in the opposite chairs, form a traditional standpoint), was a lieutenant commander, equivalent in rank to Scotty - because of his long service with Kirk he had a much closer peer relationship to Kirk and Spock than any other officer, other than Scotty and McCoy.
While this is not, in and of itself, all that unusual, Spock, Scotty and McCoy are all older than Kirk - this is the only "younger" officer, in my memory, to appear to have this status.
