Chartplotter advice?

My first post here, even though I do my fair share of hunting/fishing and lurk here regularly.
I'd like to get my dad a Chartplotter for his boat since he doesn't really know his way around too well when he goes out, although he acts like he does.
Anyways, I was looking at Garmin GPSmap 421/431/441 and a couple lowrances and Humminbirds, but I have no clue what units are good or bad. I don't think I want to get a fish finder combo.
I'd like to spend around $400-500, what does the OB suggest?
ETA: his boat is an 18 foot aluminum Hanko, and most of his fishing is done in freshwater and out of cypremort point/vermillion bay

I have a Lowrance, buddies have Garmins, I think they are all pretty good. Do you think he'll be OK with operating it, they're fun to figure out at first.

He's behind the times technology wise, he's old school. I'm gonna sit down with him once I buy it and go through all the controls with him and prob go out with him the first couple times to get him kick started.
