Poor board choice.

It has I do with where the cartridge has to be struck by the firing pin for the primer to go off.

Center fire the primer cap is only in the middle of the cartridge. Rim fire (.22lr for example) the firing pin can hit anywhere on the back of the cartridge (even completely on the edge or "rim") and the primer will ignite. It's very simple.
