How do you get insurance for your rental car?

For the record, I always decline all coverage at the rental car counter. I assume the AAA insurance I have for my two cars also covers the rental car, but I have not read any fine print or am I aware any exclusions.
American Express gave me the option of signing up for a $17.95 full coverage for every rental (regardless of number of days) that I pay for with my credit card. I am not sure if I should take it. It is not bad for peace of mind, I guess.
What do you guys do when you rent a car?

Do this first, then decide. Amex card insurance is probably ok but it is usually secondary so check your own auto insurance first. Call your agent and ask him....better yet, show up and ask him! Let him earn some of that mooolah you are sending him!!!!

If you carry decent auto insurance, no extra coverage is necessary.
Now, if you have minimum liability on your 1984 astrovan and your renting a corvette, different story.

My company incorporates a type of insurance into the rental rate. The counter rep can see it on her screen, and has me decline coverage.
Don't know exactly what I was declining, but the travel folks at corporate say I am taken care of.

You have all coverages built into your daily rate. Due to the volume your company does, the rental company can lower the insurance cost substantially.

Anything offered to you like this is a good deal for them, not for you.

I use the Amex rental coverage. Personal auto insurance will cover damage to the rental car, but the rental company will want payment for lost revenue due to the car being out of service which most personal insurance does not cover.
