Looks like someone said: "lets make The Lottery (short story) a movie...but on a massive scale...and instead of choosing one victim to preserve society, lets choose one day and everyone is game.

I can't get beyond the terrible premise

That does look pretty interesting. If you can get beyond the inherent silliness of the premise anyway.Might be a good netflix/rental.

Looks like it could be an interesting movie if they took the premise and explored the social implications. But they'll probably only do that for like 15 minutes and then it'll turn into another generic "there's creepy strangers with masks in my house trying to kill me" movie.

If you just watch the second half of the preview, it looks like a fun watch
But that premise is just so dumb
Why would this purge thing cause unemployment and crime rates to decrease?

Couple other nitpicky things
-The disarm button shouldnt be so damn easy to hit. Especially if youre going to leave your 5 year old daughter in a room alone with it
-if this place was built to stop people from getting in, they did a terrible job at it
-Why do you let the child watch the video footage of outside the house where there is probably a ton of rape and murder going on?

Did you just get back from seeing this at the theater?

Yeah, this is just super silly.
When they started listing off the good numbers at the start, I thought it was going to be a take on Logan's Run with people being purged at a certain age or all crime punishable by death.

Looks decent, I'll RedBox it. Oh and god damn, Ethan Hawke is looking old

Because for one night only they human population is culled. Once a year all the one with bad in them go out and waste each other and thus create vaccum in the job markets and create new jobs on cleaning said messed after the who fisaco is over.
For one night only they get to do whatever they want as they actively goes out to seek it. Ethan hawke family is obviously prepared for it with their security system. However if you are one of the degenerates as show in the movie then..yeah survival of the fittest.
Remember it's just low not gone.

This is really the center of the movie apparently - and it's "panic room" theme has been done a million times now. Panic Room, House on the Left, Trespass, Firewall, Hostage, The Strangers, Funny Games, Trapped, etc.
...and the movie villains might resemble any holed-up people against the Crazies or Zombies - all have the very similar theme...attack the castle.

They stated in the preview that I saw that the unemployment rate is 1%. Even if the rest of what you said is true using this figure is just ridiculous to anyone who knows a bit about economics. It just adds to the inherent silliness of the premise. This movie will just be a generic horror/thriller genre movie imo.

Well I can see where they are coming from, think of the social impact if such a law was enacted in this day and age. Think about it.
1. The low incomes would go at each other the first year, then every subsequent year after that. The first year would be a blood bath but already you have created new jobs clean up crew and gotten rid of some of the people on government assistance.
2. New apartment complex would probably be made that protect them from the purge but not everything is fool proof so the apartment manger himself , if he a sicko would trap them in and gast them thus...more mass killing getting rid of more people.
3. Social worker that have to deal with bull crap every day or government employee that sick of their supervisor or superior would seek out their tormentor on that day and kill em.
Think of it, on the first year and day it would be a cluster frick. It would slowly go down and you will steadily see a decrease in unemployment simply because they are dead.
In the Purge universe you get the feeling from the trailer it has been going on for a while now. Ethan hawke treat it like it not a big deal so it was probably happening in his day as a kid. Now he is explaining from the tone in the movie on why the purge is a good thing and why you never unlock for anybody. Something that seem very practice and rehearsed as if it was a speak also given to him at some point in his life.
I can see it happening.

His logic is even less believable than the premise.
