I thought we moved on to mentioning other midfielders with precocious qualities.

Also I think Shelvey is a typical British style CM. he's probably had a lot of practice with long range passing, since the British game seems to emphasize that over a more thoughtful approach. The long diagonal seems to be a special favorite of a lot of English players. Personally I don't think Shelvey will put things together until much later in his career, if his temperament and lack of on field intelligence is any indication.

He has exceptional physical qualities, but, as you know, once you get to the highest level, very little separates him from other top players. It's most obvious in U21 matches when he can control a match from start to finish, but then plays for the senior team and the only impact he has is the yellow card he will inevitably receive in the first 25 minutes.

It's all about commitment and motivation once you get to the senior level. The desire to learn and improve, tactically more than physically. Unfortunately I don't think he possesses those qualities.

Interesting (accurate) insight. You always hear the straight ball emphasized when the English talk about accurate long passes, and then, you watch someone like Paul Scholes play 60 yard straight, inch-perfect diagonal balls without even trying.

I've always thought that it was amazing to compare a great passer like Pirlo to a great passer like Scholes because I feel like Pirlo's passes are rarely on a line.
