In need of some Logo help... Not for a Power Point Project..

Oh Mighty Fark Gods of TD.com.
TL;DW: Creating a small business, need a logo.
I'm meh with GIMP and need some help. I can create half assed designs but nothing that looks Professional. I need to create a logo to put on shirts and my website.
Can I use other logo's and make a logo from bits and pieces of these pre made logos? Copyright/ TM laws prevent this?
What is an appropriate logo/canvas size for Small to Medium sized logos on shirts?
As always, It's greatly appreciated!

If you own a business do the respectable thing and pay a graphic designer to create a logo for you.
