Yeah but they're not all dying in massive numbers. For the most part, by now the living now are doing a good job at living. So less people are actually dying...significantly less compared to the first 3-5 months of the outbreak.
Population of the lower 48 former united states by now probably has a 90% (if not more) loss. the initial dead are slowing down and dying because they are decomposing, not finding fresh food to eat (which also may be a somewhat water source if any) and time is taking it's toll.
the survivors are surviving for the most part. And if you haven't noticed. when a person dies, its usually rare enough to be seen by another living person, who usually disposes of their brain before they can return as a "fresh new zombie"..
