If TCU does not have a problem with his grades then I don't really buy the notion that LSU does.
I'm happy for Lawson. He'll get a stellar education at TCU and receive some solid defensive coaching in the process. I wish we would have kept him on board.

TCU does not have to follow SEC rules. If he doesn't qualify it's no skin off their back. We had the same issue with Griffin (Miami) and Huggins (Oklahoma). We wouldn't risk signing them so we told them grey shirt and you if qualify we have space. But it's a tough sell when another program comes along and says "sure we'll sign you. LSU (or A&M) just didn't want you. We do though."
SEC rules give you only 25 initial counters per year. If a kid doesn't qualify, he still counts towards that number. No other conference is working under those constraints so grade risks are going to sign with those other conferences or the SEC schools willing to take such chances. You have to weight the risk and reward. TCU's situation is all reward though so why not.
