With an actual eng degree, can you move up pretty fast as a "mud engineer"

I've been working as a derrickhand for a few years and was trying to get into mud engineering being that I had a couple guys that could get my foot in the door. As I was in that process I got an opportunity to get a safety rep job that pays way more than I ever thought they would be paid. Then an old friend messaged me out of nowhere to ask if I was interested in taking an MWD job. Hopefully the Safety Rep job comes through bc it pays slightly more starting out than the MWD job, which completely shocked me, plus it is on a schedule. It's crazy that all these opportunities have all popped up even though they are all completely different career paths. Only reason I have these opportunities is bc of knowing people, not for skill, degrees or anything else like that.
I may not get any of the jobs and have to stick to sitting on the tanks and being on the monkey board in miserable weather but its nice knowing I have a few options that may happen.
