I was in the same situation a few years ago. Wanted to start kayaking and doing trips and none of my friends wanted to. Once you buy a boat and get out on the water you meet lots of new people. Now I've got 4 kayaks in the back yard and 40-45 new friends that I paddle and do races with. I do the races for the fun of it and the experience, not the trophy.
