I think you greatly underestimate Nike's sphere of influence over US Soccer (and soccer in general.)
Why does the US play Brazil in friendlies so often?

That shite is all branding. You think administrative bodies like CAF and USSF are marketing wizards? What company is (arguably) the best in the world at branding?
