I'm trying to say that Manchester United isn't comparable to the Real Madrids of the world, and those are the only types of teams that have performed better over the period in question.

I think they are. Real Madrid hasn´t had the ´galáctico´thing going on forever. Certainly not for the past 25 years.

´Twas a gritty, no star side which beat Juventus for Ole Big Ears.

There were some all world stars on that which defeated Valencia, and the ´Galáctico´thing was just really starting when they beat Leverkusen (Figo and Zidane were on this side).

No mention of the incredible advantage that the Spanish superclubs have with their tv money?

Sure, and SAF has been manager of United for longer than I've been alive. So, I'm hardly an expert. I've just never gotten the impression that Manchester United was the absolute biggest club in the world, mostly when it comes to recruiting non-English speakers (Ronaldinho, for example).
