10/10 for me. I never read the book. There is nothing about it that bugged me.
I also wondered why the Eagles couldn't just carry them all the way to the mountain but I figured there was a reason explained in the book but cut from the movie. Or if nothing else it'd make for a short movie if the eagles did that.

There are places they prefer not to fly, such as the lonely mountain (because of smaug and men who shoot arrows) and mordor later on (sauron is all seeing and has flying creatures). Plus they are described as a proud sentient race that are not fond of transporting people.
