Also doesn't cool it down as fast. Either way, I use the frick out of my sphere's.

It does. What that author fails to realize that while he is right there are also different phases of frozenness. The bigger ice chunks are colder in the middle for longer due to the thickness. It keeps the rest of the ice colder as well causing the surface area to cool the drink at a more effective rate while not having to melt to do so.
