I'm not sure I would call 265 yards passing and 64 rushing en route to a national championship win, "slowing down," Cam Newtown.

For Cam its considered "slowing down" realizing what he did to those SEC defenses in 2010.

Certainly no worse than Bama where Newton had 255 yards and 4 Tds that year.

So it's disingenuous to say that conservative offense between two teams don't play a factor in these 9-6 "great defensive battles."

No one is saying those two teams didn't have great defensive teams but the game they played on offense was pathetic, greatly helped the defensive stats and played into the public's apathy toward the game.
