I've posted on this before and I'll reiterate it again here:

This movie isn't horrible, but it is not good film making.

The plot plods forward on a sloth's timeline then jump cuts abruptly toward the end of the movie as a means of advancing the story. But it doesn't really do anything to advance the story. Instead, it leaves the audience disjointed and confused.

The performances are well done. PSH and Phoenix do well as what they are expected to be. Phoenix in particular does well portraying a guy who has clearly lost it.

In many ways, the characters are foils of each other, reflecting back the good and bad parts of each other's personalities. Nevertheless, their interaction is not enough to keep the film interesting. About half way through, I nearly walked out. I stayed purely because of the reviews, thinking that there must be more to it than this.

But there wasn't.

Paul Thomas Anderson to me is Hit or miss. When he has a Hit (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) it is incredible. Both Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood are masterpieces IMO. (as well as two of his better known films)

But when he is miss i wont say his films are bad, but rather "meh" (Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love) as in there is something about them that just does not work.

So it is not entirely possible that The Master may not be that good. I was hyped for it and read the script a couple of months back and to be honest......I wasn't feeling it. From reading the script it seemed like there really was no plot because the characters went nowhere. There really was no conflict, no growth, nothing. So after I read it I thought maybe it would come across better on screen. But from what some people are saying it sounds like the film suffers from the same issues I had with the script. Im going to hold off judgment before I actually see it.
