Oz is good, but if you want to start with the best, then you need to go with the opinions in this thread. Mainly The Wire and The Sopranos.
Game of Thrones is awesome but only one season in.
I've heard good thing about John Adams, Deadwood, and Six Feet Under, but i would definitely start with the first two i mentioned.

my cousin told me the wire is one of the best shows he has ever seen... not that thats any different from what i see on here every day... hope the gf like the wire....
