Each facility is different. Legally the facility owns the unit once it gets to that point and can do whatever it wants with the unit. Some of the mom and pops facilities keep the units for themselves and sell the stuff piece by piece. Most of the bigger companies auction them. My area manager comes down and we cut the lock on the unit, take pictures and then run what the contents are in the local newspaper. About 6 weeks after that if no payment has been made we sell the unit. Some places cut the lock right there at the auction. We don't go through the stuff though, almost all of it is crap to be honest.
