Yeah, developers like Atlus have been making much better JRPGs than are in the Final Fantasy series for years now.
Those games define learning curve, though. Not because of the stories - which are often minimalistic and nihilistic (at least they aren't bloated and confusing), but because the battles are fricking hard. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is incredibly difficult for a first-time player. It's almost necessary to find a guide to beat some of the bosses.
