With the 1st pick of the 2012 Annual Recruiting Mock Draft, OBUDan selects:
MARIO EDWARDS JR., DE, FSU
Some people believe Dorial Green-Beckham is the best player in this class. I'm not sold on him as an elite playmaker on the next two levels, but more than anything, I like to target premium positions early, name DE or LT. Last year I nabbed Ray Drew early, in 2010 I grabbed Shon Coleman. To me, Dorial Green-Beckham has a better chance of being Roy Williams than he does Megatron, and Mario Edwards is the premiere DL from this class.
So yes, I'll take a 6'4, 300-pound kid that can do this:
To me, Edwards projects as a difference making DL. He's large, but in the UA All-American game he showed the explosiveness and burst to remain on the edge, if necessary. He has the bulk to slide inside, if need be. Edwards can play 4-3 DE, DT, or even 3-4 DE. I'm not certain where I'll have him, yet, but I'll happily take an athlete of this caliber, with this versatility. Powerful, explosive, and with good speed for a big man, Edwards is the clear no. 1 player in this class by my estimation.
Cecil D Diesel, you are officially ON THE CLOCK!
