JL was being pulled from games and saw the writing on the wall. The coaches messed with his confidence and timing by taking away practices and playing time. Miles admitted later that he wasn't getting very many practice snaps. JJ was getting the most and JL was getting fewer and fewer. Les Gave Krags the directive to help JJ improve his game. Les named his starter before the first practice and never changed his mind.
