Not ONE of those players really came down to the wire. You make it seem like you were Nostradamus with those predictions. Give me one name in that list that people really thought he was coming to LSU.
McKnight - Attention whore
Sentimore - Numbers game and became odd man out
Robinson - Played the recruiting game and got bit in the arse by it.
Kenny Bell - Never fit the mold of a Les WR. Smart decision.
Bradley Sylve - Injury concerns caused him to become a numbers game. Another smart decision.
Luther Davis - Headcase, plain and simple
Robby Green - Played the recruiting game and seemed to always be going OOS.
Of those 7, three have transferred (Sentimore, Davis, Green), two are barely getting PT (Bell, Sylve), one was dumb and got help from a dude working at Wal-Mart (Robinson) and one has become an afterthought in the NFL (McKnight).

Well technically you could add Janzen Jackson to the list.
Nation wide players that went down to the wire or decommits
Mike Davis
Justin hunter
Andre debose
Dexter prat
Tim Jernigan
Man o man.
There are many others, but these stand out to me

An afterthought in the NFL?
A small percentage of college players make it to the NFL, and even fewer stick for several years.
You have to reach a ways to define a player as a bust when he makes it to the NFL, especially a guy that NFL teams believe is playing on the wrong side of the ball.
To suggest that LA players that decide to leave the state are more likely to fail as players is also a bit silly. When a player decides to go to a school like Bama, or LSU for that matter, they have to develop as players or get processed.
In my opinion, LSU may have gotten lucky that we did not land the list of players you are discussing...because they just were not as good as projected...not because they decided to leave the state.
