I wonder if this is a possible scenario:
One reporter went a little investigating or found a little break with an insider from LSU, who told them that those players had failed a drug test. This reporter goes on to assume that these players were going to suspended and breaks the story.
LSU officials however, were planning on keeping this secret and still in the decision of whether or not to suspend them; but when this news broke out it pretty much forces them to go ahead with the suspensions.

My theory is you are 50% correct. A reporter found out they failed a drug test.
However, its their first drug test failure and for the first failure there is no suspension.
The reporter assummed the suspension.
In short, they got caught, warned (first time), not suspended.
