We don't know how long he will be ineligible for. Right now he's just flat out ineligible until that changes. LSU is seeking reinstatement with the NCAA, but it will take a while for them to rule, likely forcing him to miss multiple games.
The only report on this says that both LSU and the NCAA found that he violated the rule, but that only LSU has found him ineligible. This is probably just LSU wanting to make damned sure he can play before allowing him on the field, hence the appeal of its own decision.

So LSU is ruling him ineligible currently? Technically he could play but that would obviously be a huge gamble?
The bottom line is we're stuck waiting on the NCAA to investigate and if there is an actual ruling he could miss more games?

He's not suspended -- he has been declared ineligible by the LSU athletic department, which has applied to the NCAA to have his eligibility restored.
