Post LSU-Oregon plans: Texas A&M-SMU game?

Me and a friend are planning on hitting College Station (if its worth it) on Sunday for that game. Probably just tailgating and partying but any advice would be welcome. Is it even worth it? I know College Station is supposed to blow but it can't be bad when they have a game right?

Yes. It can be that bad.
If you want a bunch of Texas boys telling you to take off your hats,do not walk on the grass, see people grabbing their nuts ("to feel the pressure the team feels"), hearing WHOOOOOP all day, and to top it off hearing people honk their car horns to the Aggie "war" hymn that's about Texas when they're actually playing someone not named Texas, then College Station is for you.

I'm thinking I'll end up tailgating and watching it at a bar. Only going if LSU beats Oregon the night before. Otherwise just bee lining back to BR

Well, if you end up going let me know. I only live about an hour and 15 minutes from CS. If you need a place to stay, holler at me.

we def might need a place to stay. just me and one friend. might use the game to sober up and then drive if we cant find a reasonable hotel

That's cool. We've got two spare bedrooms.

Obviously I am biased since I am an alum, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. I love College Station on game day. The tailgating is good. Ignore the people that tell you to take off your hats, it is not a tradition and annoys the hell out of many of us as well. Some people do not like Aggieland. If you accept college football for what it is, a tradition rich environment, I think non students and non alum can appreciate the tradition rich school we are. There are a number of good bars and restaurants on Northgate, and like I say the tailgating is good. Some students will be d bags so just ignore them, but plenty of tailgaters will invite you over to eat some good BBQ and have a few beers. Hope that helped

sounds like it could be fun. they try to tell people not to wear hats at all on game day?
we'd prob hit tailgates around lunch time but for the most part post up in a bar.

My group tailgates between Reed Arena (basketball arena) and Olsen Field (baseball stadium). Stop on by.
The hat deal is for inside the Memorial Student Center (which isn't open because it's being renovated) or during yells. Just keep your hat on. You'll be fine.

You're a good sport.
I typed my comments mostly in hyperbole.

Transplanted Tiger living in Houston, but have made many trips to College Station for various & sundry events. The tailgating is good, not LSU good, but worth a walk-around. Head to Northgate, north of the campus across University Dr. and East of Wellborn (the street Kyle Field is on) for the game if you don't score tickets. A lot of folks go to the Dixie Chicken and it's a damn good college bar; Cold beer, loud, pretty girls. I prefer Dudley's Draw. Usually not as crowded, pool table upstairs, food's a tad better. I mean it's bar food, so don't expect haute cuisine, but I like the food better than The Chicken.
Be open minded about the "traditions". Like LSU fans they are passionate about their school. Some of its a little over the top, but I kinda like it from the outside looking in. Aggies are for the most part pretty OK folks. Just like anywhere, they have their douche bags, but Aggies are closer in temperament to Tiger fans than the Tea Sips from Texas. I'll put it this way, if I were born & raised in Texas , I would have gone to A&M way before considering tu.
Have fun!

Ha thanks Moustache, unlike some I can handle the banter and jawing on these message boards. As was said the tradition of not wearing a hat is only for the Memorial Student Center which is out of respect for those who lost their lives serving. For some reason some people think Kyle Field is a memorial, and it is not. There are flags flying around the stadium that I believe are in memory of some who have lost their lives, but the stadium and field itself are not a memorial so keep that hat on to keep the blaring Texas sun in September off your face.
Food. I am a big fan of Fitzwillys and the Dixie Chicken, right next to each other on Northgate, for some good beer and burgers. Best burgers in town are off campus at Koppe Bridge. Lots of other good food recommendations outside of burgers, so if you want to know just ask. As was said, come in open minded and I think you will enjoy it. Just ignore some of the bad apples every fan base has and you will find some pretty enjoyable tailgating and fun

I'll have my wife and two kids with me, but I tailgate among a lot of good people. We'll be setting up about 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning for SMU (it's a Sunday night game, which is a little different).
If this year is like usual, we'll have breakfast food and bloody mary's in the a.m. We'll start playing washers and playing live music aftwerwards. Then, brisket, ribs, fish frys, jalapeno poppers, etc. and lots of keg beer in the daytime. Everybody's got a dish tv, so you won't miss many sports.
Anyways, I've tailgated in Baton Rouge, and we're not quite on LSU's level. But we aren't too shabby, especially in Spence Park (across from Kyle Field) and around Reed Arena on West Campus.
If you come down, I think you'll enjoy a pretty good preseason game at night.

I live in College Station and am doing the same thing. My brother lives in BR and got us two tickets for the Oregon/LSU game. We are then headed to the A&M game. I think more LSU fans should do so as well. What a way to start the season! We have a large tailgate group as well and always welcome visitors with open arms. That is what tailgating is about.

I'm not a a&m fan but the 12 th man is quite the experience. They do a nice methodic yell thing that I always think is pretty cool. Wouldn't want to do it myself but cool when they do it kind of militaristically.

I forgot about Fitzwilly's. That's a good college bar, too.
You might find this hard to believe, but some of the best sushi I've ever had is at a place in the Northgate area in College Station, Texas!
They have this "everything but the kitchen sink" roll (that's not the name of it) that's pretty freaking good! I don't remember the name of the place, but I'm sure some of these Good Ags on the thread will know.

I just graduated and spent four years in College Station, and I have never heard of good sushi on Northgate. That is disappointing

any advice would be welcome
I'd recommend finding a nice grassy spot to set up your tailgate on... there should be a sign that says "sacred grass" or something like that... just ignore it; this would be the best spot for a tailgate if you want to get some action.

I would hope that more LSU fans do this...
SMU will be a fun game just because its game 1 and the tailgates will be a blast as always. If you want a place to hit up come by Spence Park on the south side of the bridge for some pulled pork sandwiches and beer a couple hours before the game.
