I would recommend reading Moneyball by Michael Lewis. Good, fun read and that explains some of the inefficiencies of baseball through Billy Beane's A's. Trust me, I did not come these conclusions on my own, but they seem to make sense.

I have read the book but a guy like Bautista is getting paid to drive runs in so for you to say it is overrated in his case is wrong...

I also think you are missing the main theme of moneyball which is finding qualities and traits that a player has that are undervalued by other teams. the reason for this is to get an advantage as a small market team. during the time that the strategy started OBP was actually a stat that was often overlooked. If you want me to go on why it does work during the regular season but rarely works in the postseason just let me know.
