In a case like Michelle Tafoya last night, her producer undoubtedly told her to ask that question. Those "spur of the moment" interviews are tricky anyway because the person being interviewed wasn't thinking about what they would say until 10 secs beforehand.
Also, Suzy Kolber definitely knows her stuff. I was also a big fan of Melissa Stark when she was on MNF.
